摘要： We compared the risks and benefits of COVID-19 vaccines using a causal pathway analysis to weigh up possible risk factors of thromboembolic events post-vaccination. The self-controlled case series (SCCS) method examined the association between thromboembolic events and vaccination while a case-control study assessed the association between thromboembolic events and COVID-19, addressing under-reported infection data issues. The net vaccine effect was estimated using results from SCCS and case-control studies. We used electronic health record data from Corewell Health (16,640 subjects in SCCS and 106,143 in case-control). We found increased risks of thromboembolic events post-vaccination (incidence rate ratio: 1.19, 95% CI: [1.08, 1.31] after the first dose; 1.22, 95% CI: [1.11, 1.34] after the second dose). Vaccination attenuated infection-associated thromboembolic risks (odds ratio: 4.65, 95% CI: [4.18, 5.17] in unvaccinated vs 2.77, 95% CI: [2.40, 3.24] in vaccinated). After accounting for vaccine efficacy and protection against infection-associated thromboembolic events, vaccination decreases thromboembolic event risk, especially during high infection rate periods.

摘要： This paper evaluates the effectiveness of economic policies implemented by fiscal and monetary authorities against the Covid-19 pandemic in the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU). To that end, we employ a medium-scale DSGE model that regards WAEMU as a closed system, made up of a continuum of small open economies. Our simulations reveal that, while an ample battery of fiscal and monetary measures was deployed to counter the challenges posed by Covid-19 and support economic recovery, fiscal policy interventions proved more effective in the short run. Fiscal measures mitigated the pandemic’s economic fallout across all households, providing immediate relief and promoting a swift rebound.

摘要： The need for patient engagement in health research has been increasingly acknowledged and accepted in recent years. However, implementation is still limited due to lack of evidence on its value and lack of guidance on how to implement patient engagement. This study aims to provide insight into the contribution of patient engagement in the RECOVAC project, which studied COVID-19 vaccination in kidney patients, and formulate concrete practice-based action perspectives for patient engagement. We used a qualitative participatory mixed methods approach, based on the Patient Engagement Monitoring and Evaluation (PEME) framework. Patient engagement and data collection were based on the Reflexive Monitoring in Action (RMA) approach. Data collection included participant observations, open ended questionnaires and interactive reflection sessions. Qualitative analysis was done via a thematic approach. We have described the process of patient engagement systematically, provided insight in its value and found that there is a need for clear aims, expectations and preparations from the start of the engagement process. We have shown that reflection throughout the process is of utmost importance and the same applies to clear communication between researchers and patient representatives. By being part of the consortium patient representatives had direct access to information, straight from the source, on for example the vaccination schedule and medication availability and had indirect influence on decisions made by the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) on preventive measures and treatment against COVID-19. Having experienced patient representatives is important, otherwise training needs to be provided. We also found that patient engagement had impact on conduct and outcomes of research activities itself and may have impact on future research and patient engagement activities in general. 摘要： Purpose To determine the risk of optic neuritis (ON) during non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPI), vaccination and infection phase of coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) in comparison to pre-outbreak levels in pediatric and adult populations in South Korea. Design A nationwide, population-based, retrospective study. Participants South Korean individuals with a primary diagnosis of ON between January 2017 and December 2022. Methods The Korean Health Insurance Review and Assessment database was queried for new diagnoses of ON between January 2017 and December 2022. Data were divided into 4 periods: pre-COVID-19 (2017-2019), NPI (2020), nationwide vaccination (2021) and nationwide infection (2022). The risk of ON development for each period was calculated and compared to pre-COVID-19 levels with 95% confidence intervals (CI) reported. Main outcome measures Incidence rate ratio (IRR) of ON for each period. Results A total of 7,216 patients (52.7 % females) were included in the study, with 3,770 patients diagnosed with ON pre-COVID-19 (2017-2019), 1,193 patients during NPI, 1,135 patients during the vaccination and 1,118 patients during the infection phases. The annual incidence of ON during NPI (IRR 0.92 (95% CI 0.85-1.00), P=0.043), vaccination (IRR 0.88 (95% CI 0.81-0.95), P=0.001) and infection (IRR 0.86 (95% CI 0.80-0.93), P<0.001) phases significantly decreased compared to pre-COVID-19 levels when adjusted for age and sex. The proportions of diagnosis with multiple sclerosis (MS), neuromyelitis optica (NMO), and acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) among patients who developed ON significantly increased in 2021 in comparison to the pre-outbreak levels (9.87% vs. 5.81%; P=0.0002). Conclusions The risks of ON development during NPI, vaccination and infection phases of COVID-19 did not increase in comparison to the pre-outbreak levels in general population. 摘要： The COVID-19 pandemic has left an enduring mark on human history. This study investigates the intergenerational transmission of COVID-19 memories through a unique approach involving 49 participants aged 18-30. Specifically, participants were prompted to share a COVID-19 memory they would choose to transmit to their future children. Furthermore, participants provided reasons for selecting that particular memory, utilising a memory functions scale and open-ended responses. Applying Transition Theory, we examined the transitional impact, event importance, previous rehearsal, and valence of reported memories. Results revealed that 88% of memories revolve around distinctive events inducing psychological and material changes. Perceived as significant, negative, and transitional, these memories are predominantly public in nature. Predictors of event importance include previous rehearsal and psychological change. Participants share memories primarily for directive purposes, intending to inform future generations. The results imply that transitions not only organise personal memories but may also direct and shape memories for public events.

摘要： The global spread of viruses can lead to the release of large amounts of disinfectants or antiviral drugs into the water environment. The resulting disinfection byproducts (DBPs) and residual antiviral drugs, acting as genotoxic substances or their precursors, may pose risks to aquatic animals and drinking water sources; however, to date, no studies have analyzed the changes in genotoxicity in the Yangtze River before and after the epidemic. In the present study, water and sediment samples from the Yangtze River were collected during different seasons, just before and after the outbreak of COVID-19, and were assessed using the SOS/umu test (with and without liver S9). The results indicated that water samples exhibited more pronounced genotoxicity than did sediments, with direct genotoxicity being the primary factor. Additionally, there were significant regional differences, with notably greater genotoxicity observed in the upper Yangtze River than in the lower reaches before the COVID-19 epidemic. However, this trend was reversed six to ten months later, suggesting the accumulation of DBPs or antiviral drugs after the COVID-19 pandemic. Moreover, the risk quotient indicated that 65% of the water samples posed a high risk for Paramecium caudatum, whereas 71% of the samples posed a medium risk for Danio rerio, thereby representing a potential threat to the ecological security of the Yangtze River. In conclusion, this study, at the basin scale, revealed the impacts of COVID-19 on the Yangtze River, highlighting the need to prevent DBPs and pharmaceutical pollution during similar events in the future.

摘要： Research has begun to document the impact of COVID-19, and corresponding restrictions associated with the pandemic, to several unintended consequences including increased rates of family violence. Given these findings, there have been calls for research to understand predictors of family violence, and how such predictors may shift during differing periods of the pandemic. Rooted in the family stress model and social disorganization theory, this study used call for service data from two police departments located in the Midwest of the United States, to examine whether the relationship between sociostructural indices on the number of family violence incidents varied in the times before, during, and after COVID-19 Safer-at-Home orders. Based on a series of negative binomial regression models, results show that the association between neighborhood (i.e., Census block group) concentrated poverty, the percentage of the population between 15 and 24 years of age, and the percentage of the population that identify as male on family violence was amplified during and/or after the adoption of the Safer-at-Home order. Results also indicated that the Safer-at-Home order eradicated the once significant effect of residential mobility and family violence incidents. Lastly, although neighborhoods located within the more populous and metropolitan city experienced fewer family violence incidents, compared to the mixed rural-suburban city, the gap in the number of incidents per neighborhood decreased in the times following the enactment of the Safer-at-Home order. Based on these findings, proactive and reactive policies regarding resource dissemination and increasing neighboring activities are discussed.

摘要： At the end of 2019, the world grappled with an unparalleled public health crisis due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which also precipitated a global economic downturn. Concurrently, material panic buying occurred frequently. To restore benign market order, the government instituted a series of interventions to stabilize the market. This scholarly exploration dives deep into evaluating the tangible impact of these governmental measures in Hubei, China, a region which found itself at the very epicenter of the epidemic in its onset phase. Existing papers often employ structured questionnaires and structural equation methods, with small samples and limited effective information. In contrast, we used a dataset of tens of thousands of entries and employed text analysis to maximize the extraction of valid information. Through a meticulous analysis of public feedback, our findings unveil several pivotal insights: (1) The news measures of materials have the best effect. Their effectiveness, in descending order, is ranked as: material sufficiency > authority effect > market supervision > appeal and guidance; (2) Government measures during the epidemic’s initial phase exhibited a delay. After the lockdown measures, the phenomenon of large-scale buying has been formed, and the relevant material news was released later; (3) A dual approach combining authority influence with material sufficiency yielded the most favorable results. In light of these findings, the paper concludes with tailored recommendations aimed at amplifying the efficacy of government-led public opinion interventions in future crises.

摘要： Worldwide, governments imposed non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) during the COVID-19 pandemic to contain the pandemic more effectively. We examined the effectiveness of individual NPIs in the United States during the first wave of the pandemic. Three types of analyses were performed. First, a prototypical Bayesian hierarchical model was employed to gauge the effectiveness of five NPIs and they are gathering restriction, restaurant capacity restriction, business closure, school closure, and stay-at-home order in the 42 states with over 100 deaths by the end of the wave. Second, we examined the effectiveness of the face mask mandate, the sixth and most controversial NPI by counterfactual modeling, which is a variant of the prototypical Bayesian hierarchical model allowing us to answer the question of what if the state had imposed the mandate or not. The third analysis used an advanced Bayesian hierarchical model to evaluate the effectiveness of all six NPIs in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, and thereby provide a full-scale estimation of the effectiveness of NPIs and the relative effectiveness of each NPI in the entire United States. Our results have enhanced the collective knowledge on the general effectiveness of NPIs in arresting the spread of COVID-19.

摘要： Adiposity shows opposing associations with mortality within COVID-19 versus non-COVID-19 respiratory conditions. We assessed the likely causality of adiposity for mortality among intensive care patients with COVID-19 versus non-COVID-19 by examining the consistency of associations across temporal and geographical contexts where biases vary. We used data from 297 intensive care units (ICUs) in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland (Intensive Care National Audit and Research Centre Case Mix Programme). We examined associations of body mass index (BMI) with 30-day mortality, overall and by date and region of ICU admission, among patients admitted with COVID-19 (N = 34,701; February 2020–August 2021) and non-COVID-19 respiratory conditions (N = 25,205; February 2018–August 2019). Compared with non-COVID-19 patients, COVID-19 patients were younger, less often of a white ethnic group, and more often with extreme obesity. COVID-19 patients had fewer comorbidities but higher mortality. Socio-demographic and comorbidity factors and their associations with BMI and mortality varied more by date than region of ICU admission. Among COVID-19 patients, higher BMI was associated with excess mortality (hazard ratio (HR) per standard deviation (SD) = 1.05; 95% CI = 1.03–1.07). This was evident only for extreme obesity and only during February–April 2020 (HR = 1.52, 95% CI = 1.30–1.77 vs. recommended weight); this weakened thereafter. Among non-COVID-19 patients, higher BMI was associated with lower mortality (HR per SD = 0.83; 95% CI = 0.81–0.86), seen across all overweight/obesity groups and across dates and regions, albeit with a magnitude that varied over time. Obesity is associated with higher mortality among COVID-19 patients, but lower mortality among non-COVID-19 respiratory patients. These associations appear vulnerable to confounding/selection bias in both patient groups, questioning the existence or stability of causal effects.
